Avoid the Flying Cake

As much as I enjoy a birthday party, one thing that I don't like is the ceremonial "throwing cake at each other" routine that seems to happen at every birthday party I go to in China.

One of my students even threw cake at me during a Christmas party which got my nice dress shirt messy and some cake found its way on my digital camera. I was not happy about that at all; he was lucky to walk home that night under his own power.

On Friday, we had a birthday party for my buddy and co-worker Rick. Cake throwing was on the agenda that night as well. I'm glad Rick's Japanese girlfriend, Rika, only threw it at him and he threw some at her later. I guess it's a common thing to do at Japanese parties as well.
